This year, the European Mobility Week was from 16 to 22 September and it was held for the 21st time. The objective of the European Mobility Week is, among other things, to draw people’s attention to sustainable urban mobility and the use of greener forms of transport.

This year, Szeged was joined the program for the 20th time, and in an unusual way, during the entire Mobility Week, the vehicles of the Szeged Transport Company could be used for free of charge by those who presented their valid Vehicle Registration Certificate. In fact, even the whole family could travel for free, as a maximum of two adults and three children.

On 22 September, on the car-free day, many programs were held in Szeged. From early morning, bikers’ breakfast was waiting for those traveling by bike on Dóm Square. After the rehabilitation of downtown Szeged and the renovation of Oskola Street, this bike path is once again the busiest in the city, and at the same time, it is gratifying that you can expect a lot of bike traffic all day long, not just during the rush hours.

The Dugonics square event was opened by Mihálik Edvin, councilor responsible for the Green City program. During the day, visitors of the Car Free Day could take part in several programmes such as concert, games of skill, blind room and first aid demonstration. Szeged Transport Company exhibited a low-floor trolley on the square, which anyone could try.

The councilor responsible for the Green City program said that in recent years, the city has invested a lot of money and energy in developing the city’s bicycle traffic. In the framework of the SASMob European Union project, bike racks and repair stations were installed in the city and new bike paths were also built.

In order to encourage the population of Szeged, display panels presenting the results of the SASMob project were placed on Dugonics Square. The aim is that the activities supporting sustainable transport implemented by SASMOB project members have an encouraging effect on the population of Szeged.
